Bernese Oberland: Lauterbrunnen Valley
The morning was overcast and drizzly, so we set out to explore the valley by bike. An easy 10k round trip took us past four beautiful waterfalls.
In the morning we stopped at Trummelbach falls, a massive waterfall complex built into the side of the cliff. This waterfall system is the only drainage point for the glaciers on the Jungfrau peak, high above. The water flows through at a massive rate, carrying 20,000 liters per second.
Through an elevator and stairway system, it is possible to explore inside the caves to see the waterfall make its many twists and turns as it travels to the valley floor. The sound of the crashing water gives you a sense of how swiftly the falls are moving. Plus, the complex gives you great views across the valley below.
From here, we continued up the valley to Stechelberg where we made a pit stop for lunch and played on the playground before turning back and enjoying a mostly downhill ride back to the bike shop.
