Stopover: Frisco, Colorado
We left Estes Park, to move Southwest to Frisco, Colorado, near Breckenridge. This was going to be our first real test of towing in the mountains as we took I70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel at more than 11,000 feet and then had to make the long, steep, descent into the valley below. To make the challenge just a little more challenging, it was raining heavily with periods of hail and snow during our drive.
I’m pleased to report that we had absolutely no problems at all and I feel like writing a love letter to Audi as a result. Our little car had no trouble managing any part of the day’s journey and brought us to our beautiful campsite in Heaton Bay.
Our time in this area was more of a stopover than stay. We arrived to heavy rain and 37 degree temperatures. The desert of Utah, with its 80+ degree days and campground pool, was temptingly close! Plus, it’s a shoulder season in the mountains and we found many attractions to be either still under snow, or closed until summer.
So, we filled one day with a short hike near Breckenridge and an afternoon matinee of Raya and the Last Dragon in a real movie theater – our first since 2019 – and got on the road the next day.
Eli and Toby got a great set-up by the campfire and managed to put in a full workday. Overall, still a great setting and a great stop.
